Get fit this summer through smart exercise habits and healthier eating.

Summertime is upon us and it’s a great time to get healthier.  The days are warm and long and open to so many exciting activities to keep you trim or on your way to shedding those extra pounds stored up over the winter.

Now is a great time to make a renewed commitment to exercise and eating right.  But before you start that new running program or join a gym, go see your primary care physician for a complete physical and to discuss any health concerns you might have.  Additionally, talk to him or her about dietary changes you can make to eat healthier and help boost weight loss for a healthier you.

Summertime exercise and nutrition tips

  • Open your mind to new exercise options this summer.  Try hiking, biking, swimming, or walking.  Setting a daily routine is the surest way to develop your new healthy exercise plan.  Enlist a friend or family member to go with you each morning or evening when temperatures are the most moderate.  Go for a nightly walk with your family or walk your dog at least once a day (he’ll love it!).
  • Drink up.  Drink plenty of water this summer – before, during, and after your workout.  Plain old tap water is usually the best option.  Proper hydration is critical to avoiding heat stroke and other health problems.
  • Keep healthy food and snacks in your house and with you as you venture out on each new adventure this summer.  Fresh fruit is plentiful at this time of year as well as wonderful fresh veggies, that you can munch on throughout the day.  These combined with healthful trail mixes made up of nuts and dried fruits (and even a little chocolate), will keep nutrition fun this summer.
  • Get up off of the couch and get active.  Limit TV and computer time to less than two hours a day, and get outside to do your yard work or to play Frisbee with your dog.
  • Protect yourself from the sun this summer.  Sunscreen is a must, even on cloudy days.  Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen frequently, especially if you’ve been in the water or have been very active running or playing hard.  Watch those ears and toes as well.  Look for sun screen that offers both UVA and UVB protection.  Invest in sun protective clothing and broad rimmed caps that block the sun.  Exercise early in the morning or in the evening for the best protection against the sun’s damaging rays.  Wear sun glasses to protect your eyes from ultraviolet exposure that can damage your eyes over time.

Getting active is a great way to spice up your life this summer!  Join a gym, join a sports team, or form a walking club in your neighborhood.  Meet new people.  Lose some weight.  Improve your diet.  The ball’s in your court!
